What is MCT Oil?

What is MCT Oil? MCT Oil is a kind of saturated fat known as medium chain triglycerides. MCT Oil has become hip and trendy, especially for many on a ketogenic diet.

Most commonly, you will find MCT oil from coconut oil or palm kernel oil.

Should you use MCT oil?  While saturated fats have been linked cardiovascular disease, there is it not a lot of current research whether or not this applies to MCT Oil.

In other words, we don’t yet know if MCT Oil is great for you or not. It is probably fine in moderation, but let’s be careful until more research is complete.

It is good to remember that most people on a ketogenic diet do not see a change to their cholesterol levels at all, while a few people see their LDL (bad cholesterol) levels have a dramatic increase, which should give us pause before we take off and start chugging MCT oil.

Until more is understood about MCT oils’ effects on the body, try to keep saturated fats, including MCT oil, to 10% or less of your total calorie intake.
